What Isn’t A Dental Emergency?

Though many dental accidents can be scary, there are some that do not require an emergency visit, just the next possible appointment. However, just because they are not “emergencies” does not mean that these factors should be overlooked, especially not for too long.

These can include

  • Random tooth sensitivity to hot and/or cold temperatures
  • Chipped tooth where the damage has not reached lower half of tooth
  • Lost filling or crown that is not causing pain
  • Bearable and/or minor toothache

Tips for Common Dental Emergencies

Knocked-out permanent tooth

If you accidentally knock out a permanent or adult tooth, the American Dental Association recommends that the tooth is always kept it moist. Attempt to place the tooth back into the socket without touching the root.

If that is not possible, place the tooth between your gum and cheeks, in milk, or an ADA approved tooth preservation product. Call our office immediately to get in ASAP.

Cracked Tooth

Immediately clean the area by rinsing the mouth with warm water. Use a cold compress on the face to reduce swelling. Call our office to schedule an emergency appointment.

Minor tooth aches/pain

If you are experiencing discomfort or lower pain in your mouth, first try rinsing the mouth with warm water and carefully floss between teeth to remove any food particles. It is not recommended to place aspirin directly onto the aching tooth or gums.

Biting tongue or lip

Biting your tongue or lip can be very painful, but not an emergency in most cases. When the bite does not sever part of the tongue or lip, the best treatment can often be rinsing the area with warm water and applying a cold compress.

If bleeding does not reduce, or there is excessive swelling, contact a medical professional for additional advice.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Though many dental emergencies are not preventable, others can be. Proper preventive malignance and good oral hygiene habits be helpful in avoiding future issues.

Come in for regular dental cleanings at least once every six months and be sure to mention anything abnormal to Dr. Albik. This ensures that possible emergencies are caught before they occur, leaving you happy and healthy!
